Research laboratories and offices for collaborative projects be-tween the University of Nairobi, University of Manitoba, Oxford, University of Washington and others. Laboratories include bio-containment Level III (aerosol), Level II(non-aerosol) plus several Level II laboratories. The mechanical engineering design was done by Smith-Carter of Canada and executed under the supervision of Varsani and Associates of Kenya and Pharos Architects.
Upon completion, the lab achieved the highest standard of bio-containment in the region. The laboratories mainly provide a center for HIV research but also allow for the processing of extremely contagious pathogens in the Level III(aerosol) lab. The main challenges were to overcome the inexperience of the local consultants and building contractors in the execution of bio-containment.
